RUGIPO HOLDS 6TH POLYTECHNIC LECTURE SERIES

The 6th Edition of RUGIPO lecture series was delivered on Wednesday 19th March, 2019. While delivering the well applauded paper, Dr. Olugbenga Jinadu, a Chief Lecturer in the Department of Accountancy, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo charged Educational Institutions to adopt online services to reduce the use of papers, filing cabinets, folders and shelves in offices in order to save cost.

Dr. Jinadu made this recommendation in his paper titled Environmental Reporting Quality in Nigeria: Corporate Governance and External Engagement Determinants . The Guest Lecturer expressed concern on how to curtail the environmental and health challenges confronting the generality of Nigeria and the way forward for future generations.

As part of his recommendations, the Lecturer also stressed the need for environmental reporting to be made compulsory to compel companies and Educational Institution to measure, monitor, account and report on their environmental impacts to improve the current level and trends of reporting.

He also opined that companies should ensure full compliance with the code of corporate governance in Nigeria to improve the level of environmental formation disclosure to various stakeholders and that companies be encouraged to imbibe the principle of independent assurance of environmental information in annual reports to enhance users confidence in environmental information.

Dr. Jinadu also strongly advocated for measures to reduce waste through the 3Rs of environment: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, and also the need to adopt a green transportation system that does not have negative effect on the environment as well as renewable energy instead of fossil fuel that has a finite life expectancy.

Earlier during his welcome address, the Acting Rector, Mr. Gani Ogundahunsi charged participants to contribute to the reconstruction of our ailing society. He noted that the main focus of the academic discourse was the concept of quality which according to him Is a benchmark for achieving genuine civilization that truly engenders man’s happiness. He therefore charged other academic staff in the Institution to showcase what they have, as well as add to the existing knowledge required to address societal needs.

The academic event was attended by many dignitaries and Senior Management Staff of the Polytechnic including: the Deputy Rector, Engr. (Dr.) Samuel Alagha; the Acting Registrar, Mr. Sule Atiku; The Bursar, Mr. Mathew Adejuwon; and Coordinator, Library Services, Mrs. Racheal Aladeniyi.
