The Chairman, Governing Council of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Barr. Banji Alabi, has called on all and sundry within the Polytechnic community to strive hard in turning the Institution to a Silicon Valley that will boost the internal revenue generation in the Polytechnic as well as make the economy of the State to be ranked among the best in the world. According to him, California is the largest economy in the world. Its economy is larger than that of France or Brazil. The little problem is that California is not a Country. It is a State in the United States of America (USA). It has little offshore oil, yet its economy is larger than States in the US that are famous for their oil reserves, like Texas.
The economy of California is built around Stanford University. The technologies and inventions that spewed out of Stanford are converted to money-spinning enterprises with which Silicon Valley was developed as an economic region. Today, the Silicon Valley serves as a global center for high technology, venture capital, innovation and social media companies like Apple, eBay, Cisco, Lockheed, Hewlett Packard (HP), Google, Netflix, Facebook, Oracle, Tesla and other multibillion dollar companies as offshoot of the Silicon Valley, and all cited in California.
This is a challenge to us in RUGIPO, because our motto is “Advancement Through Technology” and it is on this premise that the Governing Council is determined to make RUGIPO our own Stanford, an ideal Institution to absorb, domesticate, and make use of the intellectual output in human and material resources to make RUGIPO become our own Silicon Valley. To realize this vision, therefore, he admonishes the entire workforce in RUGIPO to work well. He posited “Let all those who may be connected with RUGIPO project, progress this dream, so that it will be on record, that during our tenure in office, we put in our best and that we did not betray the trust.” he said and I quote,”We can carve out Silicon Valley from RUGIPO – Yes, we can”.Success is sweet and rest comes after labour. If we can put all our hands on deck to achieve a desired result that will turn our shame to fame. He asserted by quoting the words of Martin Luther King Jnr. “in the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends”.
Whilst noting the above, he passionately feel the pains we are going through as a result of non-payment of salaries and that he had taken right steps with the appropriate authority for a succour. On our part, the needful is expected as done in other sister Institutions to boost our internal revenue generation. Some Institutions around us are making efforts. Federal University of Technology, Akure, is into tomatoes; College of Education, Ikere, Ekiti is into printing press and farming while Ondo State University of Science & Technology, Okitipupa, is into wealth creations. It is our turn to invent and innovate as we cannot afford to fold our arms and go cap in hand begging for subvention all the time.
The entire Polytechnic Community is required to tap from this piece and possess our possessions.
